Sun launches Java Store
At JavaOne 2009, Sun launched Java Store, a consumer facing application that opens up the distribution channel for developers.
Java Store enables developers to connect directly with more than 800 million worldwide desktop Java users and drive revenue through the sale of innovative applications.
The easy-to-use storefront application was created in JavaFX, and is currently available as a Private Beta program for U.S. residents that have Java. The Java Store is expected to be available in Australia and New Zealand in 2010.
Developing applications for the Java Store
The opportunities to make money from the sales of these applications for developers are vast and can be compared to the success of the iPhone store from Apple.
"With more than one billion desktops and devices running Java, applications delivered through the Java Store could dwarf those deployed through Apple's popular App Store," said James Gosling, Sun Microsystems, in a recent interview.
"The iPhone [App Store] is a rounding error compared to what this could be," Gosling said. "The size of the market when you glue together all of these domains where you can deploy Java applications, it's a couple of billion at least."
With the Java Store, the Java Warehouse has been created to enable developers to submit their applications.
The Java Warehouse manages developer registration, application submission, content management, provisioning, and settlement, enabling developers to focus on creating Java applications.
"The store that you see today manages deployment (of applications) to desktops. But in not too long you'll see it managing deployment to cell phones and cable TV set-top boxes, and all kinds of strange things," said Gosling.
What’s in the Java Store?
The early version of the Java Store includes a sampling of social software applications and games. As the store comes closer to opening fully later this year, the categories of applications will expand.
Example applications that will be available include:
RuneScape - the world's most popular, free, massive multiplayer online role playing game. Travel through the realm of Gielinor interacting with other players to complete your quest
Twitter FX - a JavaFX-Based Twitter Client that delivers one of the most popular social software applications in a richer, more expressive user experience
The global impact of Java
Today, Java is the most widely deployed technology platform and the Java Store opens up new opportunities to developers and users to new and innovative applications.
The reach of the Java platform shows the possibilities for the success of the Java Store:
- More than 6.5 million Java developers worldwide
- More than 7 billion Java devices
- 2.6 billion + mobile devices
- 40 million TV set-top boxes
- 800 million Java desktops
