If you think your storage is growing at a rapid rate, consider Wikipedia.
With more than 250 million unique visitors each month and a 100,000-strong community of active volunteer editors, Wikipedia ( a project of the Wikimedia Foundation) needs to scale at an exponential rate. What's more, it must support collaborative development by a global network of users.
The Wikimedia Foundation's decision to use Sun's Open Storage platforms over proprietary alternatives is symbolic of the massive market shift accompanying the global Web build out.
As more and more organisations evolve their businesses to deliver rich media, high-quality video, and real-time information to millions of users, the market has called for a new approach to storage.
According to The Wikimedia Foundation, implementing Sun's Open Storage infrastructure and open source MySQL database means they can create a better and faster user experience.
An open source platform means Wikipedia's end-users can more easily collaborate, improve, modify and share information to empower people around the world.
This is the basis of Sun's open source strategy — collaboration.
This strategy has helped many businesses use the latest technology at a lower cost than ever before and Open Storage is the latest in a long line of innovations from Sun.
Just as some open source technologies took off in the post-dot.com slowdown, Open Storage and open source databases, like MySQL, are set to thrive in the current economic slowdown.
Many of Australia's top 100 businesses are already active users of MySQL, demonstrating its viability for medium and large enterprises.
Sun gives ANZ Startups a Head Start
Startup Essentials is a program designed to give a head start to innovative startups and the Web 2.0 success stories of the future.
The Wikimedia Foundation is a Sun Startup Essentials program member. The program has enabled it to get high-performance, enterprise-grade systems at attractive startup prices.
The ANZ Startup Essentials program, launched in December, offers free and heavily discounted Sun products and services to newly established businesses. In Australia, Sun will work with its partners MCR and WebCentral to bring the program to market. We will be announcing our partners for the rollout of the New Zealand program shortly.
