Sun Scores Australian Award for Green IT

Sun Microsystems has won an Australian award for its work in eco-responsible computing.

Sun snared the Public Relations Institute of Australia NSW award ahead of seven other finalists for its program to raise awareness of green IT.

Research showed that following a 12 month educational program conducted by Sun, there was a growth in awareness of green IT practices among IT decision makers in business and government.

The research results highlighted that eco-responsibility isn’t just an environmental consideration but also an economic one,” said Angus MacDonald, Chief Technologist, Sun Microsystems ANZ.

Moving forward, organisations need to start preparing for carbon trading. Our research also showed that 33 per cent of respondents had no plans to monitor carbon emissions."

These companies will have a real challenge ahead of them, especially the ones that will have to report in 2009.

Eco-responsible solutions from Sun span everything from Sun Ray Virtual clients on the desktop to its Modular Data Centre (commonly known as Project Blackbox) which is housed in a standard shipping container.

For traditional IT environments, Sun servers incorporating Cool Threads technology consume as much as 80 per cent less power than comparable systems, while running cooler and delivering greater performance.
