EDGE - Sun Microsystems Australia Customer Program

Intel & Sun Smash Server Stats

Sun Microsystems has doubled its share of the x86 server market in Australia according to IDC’s Q1 2008 ANZ x86 Strategist Tracker.

Ranked number four in the segment, Sun’s x86 market share has grown to 4.7 per cent in Q1 2008 – up from 2.29 per cent in 2007 in terms of revenue.

What’s more, customer interest in Sun’s x86 offerings continues to grow.

Just last month, hundreds of Australians/New Zealanders attended events around the nations to hear about the results of Sun’s alliance with Intel.

What is driving this growth?

Sun now delivers customers more choice and better performance.

Customers can choose to run Windows, Linux, VMWare or Solaris software on Intel, AMD or SPARC processors.

Why Sun and Intel?

Sun’s innovation, combined with Intel’s design and manufacturing, has spawned some of the market’s best volume servers to tackle the challenges of energy consumption and space.

When stacked against the competitors, Sun servers running on Intel are up to half the size, 72 per cent cooler, 54 per cent more energy efficient and as much as 70 per cent lighter.

Forged in January 2007, the Sun/Intel alliance has already produced four world-class systems designed around Quad-core Intel processes.

The Sun Fire X4450, X4150 and Sun Blade X8540 and X6250 deliver applications to enable customers to cope with today’s demanding issues of power, cost, space and heating.

The latest is the Sun Fire X4450 Server – the world’s smallest, four-socket, x86, Quad-core sever. Compared to its competitors:

Sun Fire X4450 Dell Poweredge R900 IBM System X3850 M2 HP Proliant DL580 Generation 5
Rack Size 2U Twice the size Twice the size Twice the size
Weight 25.54kg 20% heavier 70% heavier 63% heavier
Max BTU/hr 3,221 66% hotter 72% hotter 53% hotter
Max power consumption 1,050W 50% less efficient 54% less efficient 37% less efficient

What sparked the companies to collaborate? Customer demand.

“Customers wanted systems that took advantage of Sun and Intel’s combined innovation. And they wanted to know the technologies were optimised to perform well together,” Gary Kelly, Systems Practice Manager, Sun Microsystems ANZ said.

“If you are about to port Solaris to an Intel-based system, you want to know that the system can take advantage of all the capabilities within both the hardware and software,” Kelly said.
