Sun acquires world's fastest growing database MySQL
Sun’s US$1 billion acquisition of MySQL enhances our open source commitment.
The integration of the world's most popular open source database into Sun's portfolio will mean even greater choice for open source applications.
Sun and MySQL combined will offer a complete, open source, enterprise-grade application stack from the operating system, to the database and even to the data integration middleware.
This line-up will give customers a powerful end-to-end system for developing Web 2.0 applications – without any of the licensing costs or restrictions.
MySQL the most popular platform for modern developers and network services
MySQL has an almost 50 per cent share of the open source database market with leading customers including Facebook, Google, Nokia, Yahoo! and YouTube.
More than 100 million copies of MySQL's open source database software have been downloaded and distributed across all major operating systems, hardware vendors, geographies, industries and application types. And an additional 50,000 copies are downloaded daily.
The integration with Sun will greatly extend the commercial appeal of MySQL's offerings:
- Sun will back MySQL with mission critical support through its global services offering
- MySQL's availability will broaden through Sun's extensive partner channels and its OEM relationships with Intel, IBM and Dell
Sun and MySQL bolster open source commitment
Sun is already committed to the business model at the heart of MySQL's success. Our priority has always been to first invest in communities of users and developers and then create commercial services without customer lock in.
Over the past few years, Sun has distributed hundreds of millions of licenses and invested to build some of the free software world's largest communities.
MySQL already runs in a large number of installations on Sun's SPARC and x64 server platforms. We have optimised the community version of MySQL which many customers use to develop Web applications.
Sun Optimised AMP Stack
Sun offers a new recipe for success - the Solaris OS + AMP (Solaris 10 OS, Apache, MySQL, and PHP).
Committed to the open AMP stack, this "recipe" provides the same Web applications you know and use, but on a more secure open-source platform with greater scalability.
Sun provides complete step-by-step instructions to get up and running more quickly when building and deploying Web applications.

Continued support for the open web world
Sun is committed to providing choice. And we'll continue to work closely with database providers to ensure ongoing service and support for the mission critical environments that run the world's banks, retailers, telcos and governments.
We'll invest in both the community, and the marketplace – to accelerate the industry's shift away from proprietary technology to the new world of open web platforms.
