Project Blackbox world's first 'data centre in a box' to visit Australia

Project Blackbox, Sun's ground breaking 'data centre in a box' will arrive in Australia this December on a tour scheduled to visit Sydney and Canberra.

Sun's latest eco-innovation, Project Blackbox is a prototype of the world's first virtualised data centre. It is a build-once deploy-anywhere modular data centre in a 20-foot shipping container.

With Sun's network computing infrastructure and grid computing expertise, it is designed to cut complexity and optimise space, energy and performance. Project Blackbox is a simple solution to a complex problem.

The Data Centre in a box

The 'Greenest IT company under the Sun' (Fortune magazine, April 2007), Sun has created a data centre that removes the need for bricks and mortar investment.

It provides companies with the freedom to locate their data centres wherever there is power, water and a network connection.

An ideal solution for rapid data centre expansion, Project Blackbox can be easily deployed in a secure warehouse, a rooftop or a separate geographical location.

Remarkably it can be implemented in one tenth of the time it takes to design, build and deploy a traditional data centre.

View some examples of unusual scenarios for Project Blackbox:

Sustainable and efficient

A recent study by Gartner found that by 2015 the cost of energy to run computers will be greater than the cost of acquiring them.

Similarly IDC predicts that by 2008, data centre users will be spending more on powering and cooling systems than on new server technology.

With this in mind, Project Blackbox has been designed with an integrated state-of-the-art water cooling system. This means it consumes 20 per cent less energy than traditional data centres.

Sun will take back any Project Blackbox and its contents, from anywhere in the world and reuse, recycle, or dispose of it in an environmentally responsible way.

Build once, deploy anywhere

With a number of unique design features to optimise performance, Project Blackbox delivers:
  • Range of operating systems for SPARC to x64 systems
  • Up to 1,000 x64 cores
  • Seven terabytes of memory
  • More than two petabytes of storage
  • Shock absorption for safe transport and shipping
