Unlock the potential of Web 2.0

The principles of Web 2.0 can be applied across all organisations to collaborate with and become closer to customers and partners as well as employees. And there are real business case justifications.

In fact, Charles Abrams, research director at Gartner has said Web 2.0 communities and technologies will have significant impact on a broad range of traditional enterprises.

Norway creates first Web 2.0 government

The Norwegian Government has unlocked the potential of Web 2.0. Its eNorway 2009 initiative provides citizens secure Web-based access and support for all government services through a single portal.

Currently, eNorway 2009 enables citizens to vote, pay taxes, obtain social security benefits, register and manage automobiles, and conduct other civic initiatives and services.

The portal was built and supported utilising Sun Java Enterprise System, Sun identity management solutions, and x64 and UltraSPARC T1 processor-based Sun Fire servers running Solaris 10.

Sun's Java System Access Manager and Java Federation Manager enable the government to provide secure access to all of these services with a single sign-on - making it easy for users to participate.

Also, because the solution is based on Open Source Solaris, the Norwegian Government will have access to a strong ecosystem of developers and ISVs that can help build new applications and services as the project scales.

The write-able Web

Web 2.0 exemplifies Sun's belief that the Network is the Computer. Most applications have moved online and the ones that are most successful are write-able and rely on user participation.

This is evident in the six million blogs that are updated weekly. However, how much more content would be available if users could publish content from any device, at any time?

Tim Bray, Sun's director of Web technologies and co-inventor of XML believes any device that creates content should come with a button to publish that content online.

Tim discusses this and other possibilities of Web 2.0 along with Sun Distinguished Engineer Radia Perlman in a podcast interview with independent Web analyst Richard McManus.

The interview was conducted to celebrate the 15th birthday of the Web in August 2006 and posted on McManus' ReadWriteWeb blog. It includes a discussion of Sun's contributions to the Web, including the processing power of servers and the flexibility of Java.
