IDC reports impressive server and storage market share growth for Sun in Australia and New Zealand

Sun is a leader in eco-responsible innovation from the data centre to the desktop.

In the recently released IDC Enterprise Server Tracker CY2007Q1 Report and IDC Storage Tracker CY2007Q1 Report, Sun showed impressive growth in both servers and storage market shares.

Sun servers are designed to reduce cost, space and waste.

  • According to IDC, Sun grew its market share of ANZ Server Revenue from 15.2% in CY06Q1 to 26.6% in CY07Q1, taking a massive 11.4% of market share from the competition: IBM lost 1.8%, HP lost 6.8%, Dell lost 2.7%.

UltraSPARC processors are designed to save energy - Sun's CoolThreads technology uses less power and generates less heat than a household light bulb.

  • According to IDC, in CY07Q1 there were just 82 Itanium systems sold in ANZ. In contrast, Sun sold 387 UltraSPARC T1 systems. This is a relatively new CPU architecture, in the market for just 1.5 years, and enjoying fantastic customer support.
  • For the second time in the last four quarters, UNIX server sales overtook Windows server sales as the leading platform sold (by revenue). UNIX sales accounted for 41% of all server sales in the quarter.

Power efficient x64 AMD Opteron servers deliver 5 x performance, consume 1/5 the power, and require 1/4 the space.

  • According to IDC, Sun sales of x64 servers were up by 67% over the same period last year making Sun the fastest growing x64 vendor in the ANZ market.

Sun's Power saving desktops - SunRay thin clients only consume about 30 watts of power.

Tape is the most power and space efficient storage medium for infrequently accessed data - and it doesn't need cooling.

  • According to Freeman Reports' 2006 Whitepaper, "The growing importance of archive", Sun storage is #1 digital data archived. 37.1% of all archived data reside on Sun StorageTek tape solutions.

Sun offers end-to-end Server and Storage consolidation/virtualisation solutions.

  • According to IDC, SUN ANZ rose to position #3 in Disk Storage surpassing IBM in total external Disk revenue. Sun grew its market share of 10.3% in Q1CY2006 to 11.9% in Q1CY2007.
  • In UNIX Disk Storage, SUN ANZ grew its revenue by a whopping 108% in Q1CY2007 in comparison to the same quarter Q1CY2006.
  • Sun ANZ holds the #2 position in UNIX disk storage systems revenue position behind EMC.
  • Sun ANZ held the #1 ranking for UNIX disk storage units shipped for the 14th consecutive quarter further validating the message that Sun's Solaris 10 driving the UNIX market growth.

All driven by Solaris 10 Operating System is Open and Free.
According to IDC, Sun with Solaris 10 is driving the UNIX market growth. 62% of all UNIX sales are Sun Solaris. HP-UX and IBM AIX captured 14% and 21% respectively.
